ORIENTATION

January 13, 2005 & March 17, 2005

This class provides an introduction to the use of mental models for accessing the seven content
strands, an overview of the entire course, an introduction to distance learning, and an introduction to
the basic elements of each class (vocabulary words, myth busters, videos of best practices, analysis
with faculty, call-ins, facilitated processing activities on-site, use of Internet). This class will also:

  • Define early literacy

  • Describe how experiences during the early years lay the foundation needed for later success in
    conventional reading and writing

  • Describe ways of developing and maintaining children’s motivation to become readers and
    appreciation for books

  • Discuss the importance of working with families as partners in the development of early literacy

  • Discuss the interrelatedness of speaking, listening, reading, and writing

  • Describe the teacher’s role in promoting language and early literacy development
