Video Focus

Step One: Watch the video clip below:

Choose "slow" if you connect to the internet with a modem, choose "fast" if you connect with a cable modem, DSL or other fast connection (usually available at work, schools, public libraries, etc). Click on this instructions link for more help on viewing the video.


Step Two: This week's video clip focused on how curriculum can support and encourage language development in children. Think of a curriculum idea that's based on a content area (science, the arts, social sciences).

Now answer the following questions to help you reflect on how your curriculum idea can provide opportunities for children to practice expressive language skills. (The ideas highlighted in bold are key points made in the video clip.)

1. What new vocabulary words can be introduced through your curriculum idea?

2. Does the content area give children something to talk about? How can you support extended conversations about the topic?

3. In the video, the curriculum content areas encouraged children to talk about complex ideas like comparing and contrasting objects, or learning about words that have similar or opposite meanings (synonyms and antonyms). How might your curriculum idea offer these kind of language experiences?

4. One teacher in the video talked about children learning and using the words of science...words like predict, experiment, observe and hypothesis. What are the words, language and concepts that are specific to your curriculum idea? How might you encourage children to practice expressive language using the new words and ideas they are learning?

5. Another way curriculum can support expressive language is to provide children with opportunities to make discoveries and ask questions. How might your curriculum idea offer these kind of language experiences.
