Video Focus

Step One: Watch the video clip below:

Choose "slow" if you connect to the internet with a modem, choose "fast" if you connect with a cable modem, DSL or other fast connection (usually available at work, schools, public libraries, etc). Click on this instructions link for more help on viewing the video.


Step Two: Choose the best role for the matching description:

Teacher is a limited participant. Teacher may get the play going, help a child enter the play, add interest or an object to the play situation
Teacher is fully involved but lets the children lead the play and make decisions and choices
Teacher briefly observes children's play to assess whether or not the play is progressing and if the children need support

Now answer the following questions:

1. A key part of being an Observer during play is to assess how play is progressing and see if children need support. What kinds of actions, behaviors and skills would you look for during children's play to give you information about children's early literacy skills?

2. As an Stage Manager, teachers may add interest or an object to the play situation. How can participating in play in this limited way support children's early literacy skills?

3. When teachers take on a Co-Player role, they are fully involved in play, but let children lead in play and make decisions and choices. Why do you think it is important?
