Video Focus

Step One: Watch the video clip below:

   

Choose "slow" if you connect to the internet with a modem, choose "fast" if you connect with a cable modem, DSL or other fast connection (usually available at work, schools, public libraries, etc). Click on this instructions link for more help on viewing the video.


Step Two: Now answer the following questions:

1. The teacher in the video talked about how she provided modeling for parents to show them how adults can support children's reading skills. What strategies can you model for parents in your work with children?

2. Another strategy to support parents in this role is to recognize and build on parents' competence and respecting and building on oral traditions. Think about one parent in your program. How you can support them as a partner in teaching reading?

3. The teacher in the video provided a take home library to give parents access to books they can read at home with children. What are other ways you can provide parents/families with access to books?

4. Parent meetings were shown as one way to share information with parents about literacy. What are some other ways?
