Ideas Posted on the Discussion Board from Previous Classes:

Topic: Share a good idea about adding materials to your environment to support early literacy. What did you add and how did children respond?

"Today we got out an old fashioned clip board and took it outside for dictating stories. It was such a beautiful day. Five children told and illustrated stories about their pets."

"We use clipboards too. I've always carried one around to keep up with assessment, and the kids love to follow me around with theirs, and take notes too. (3 - 5 year olds)"

"I added several new kinds and colors of paper, to pique their interest. Today a child decided to write a book on the new paper, and she got several of her friends to contribute a page or two. Then she got the hole punch, asked me to help punch holes, and then tied the sheets together and put it into our library. At circle time, she 'read' the book to the class, and had her friends read their pages."

"After reading the book, Goldilocks and The Three Bears," the "Dramatic Play" center would have the following props in it: 3 different sized bowls, 3 chairs/rockers, and 3 sheets of paper decorated as and long enough to represent beds. While playing in this area, the children would be encouraged to recreate the story. If the children wished, they could role play the story to the class with one child being the narrator and the other children being the actors/actresses."
