PLAYING A

Video Focus

Activity

The examples in the video showed many ways children develop early literacy skills through play.

Take a moment and reflect on what you saw in the Clip of the Week. Remember there are no right or wrong answers.

1. As children grow and develop, their play becomes more complex. The video described elements of play that help children develop early literacy skills. What are some of those elements?.

2. Through play, children also learn to use objects symbolically. In one example in the video, children pretended their blocks were movie cameras, taking on the role of the camera man in their classroom. How do you think learning to use objects symbolically promotes early literacy skills?

3. In the video, one teacher said "In play, children are able to achieve more than they can just by themselves." Think about the children with which you work. What are some skills you have observed children using during play that you may not see them use in other situations?

4. Sometimes parents don't understand how play helps children learn to read and write. Write down what you might say to a parent who asked you why it's important for children to play.
