I can learn what
young children need for later success in reading.

Early literacy
is the knowledge, skills and attributes that
come before and lead up to conventional reading
and writing. It includes: learning to communicate
and listen, learning the sounds of spoken language,
learning about letters and the words they make,
learning about the world around you.
The HeadsUp!
Reading (HUR) mental model for
promoting early literacy includes: curriculum,
assessment, talking, playing, reading, writing
and learning the code.
Conscious competence
is knowing "why I do what I do."
An alphabet is
a code for the sounds of language.
Teachers can use
a developmentally appropriate approach in promoting
early literacy.
