Conventional reading is relying on print to gain meaning from unfamiliar text.

Teachers use children’s reading behaviors as clues to guide instruction.

Reading aloud is an effective strategy for supporting the development of: print awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary, background knowledge, interest and comprehension.

Reading to children is one way to promote children’s interest in learning to read and write. 

There are uses and benefits for large group, small group and individual reading with children. 

Strategies to engage children with books include reading aloud, shared reading and independent reading.
