Early literacy is the knowledge, skills and attributes that come before and lead up to conventional reading and writing. It includes: learning to communicate and listen, learning the sounds of spoken language, learning about letters and the words they make, learning about the world around you.

The HeadsUp! Reading (HUR) mental model for promoting early literacy includes: curriculum, assessment, talking, playing, reading, writing and learning the code.

Conscious competence is knowing "why I do what I do."

An alphabet is a code for the sounds of language.

Teachers can use a developmentally appropriate approach in promoting early literacy.
