In Pennsylvania, HeadsUp! Reading has been
a unique public/private partnership between the Heinz
Endowments, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare,
Office of Children, Youth and Families and the Central
Susquehanna Intermediate Unit’s Center for Schools
and Community’s Head Start State Collaboration
Project (HSSCP). More than 60 HeadsUp! Network training
sites have been installed across the state. The project
is coordinated by the Head Start State Collaboration
Office (HSSCO) at the Center for Schools and Communities
whose mission is to strengthen the capacity of organizations
serving children, youth and their families. Four HSSCP
Regional Coordinators provide support and technical assistance
to the Heads Up! Network sites statewide. Six colleges
in the state offer credit for the course and leaders
are working to ensure the project builds on the existing
early literacy and professional development efforts in
various parts of the state, and connects with state 2-
and 4- year colleges.
