Providence, RI is the first city to implement HeadsUp!
Reading in a city-wide model. Ready to Learn
Providence (R2LP) is a project of The Providence
Plan, a city revitalization agency with a vision
to restore hope and create new opportunities for
the people of Providence by addressing the fundamental
causes of poverty and urban decline. R2LP has brought
together a broad-based community coalition working
together to ensure that all Providence children enter
school healthy and ready to learn. R2LP has subcontracted
with CHILDSPAN: RI's Child Development and Education
Training System to coordinate the project. Providence
is implementing HeadsUp! Reading at three Spanish
and three English sites. Providence expects to train
approximately 200 child care providers during 2003-2004.
Providence's HeadsUp! Reading model also
includes use of the Early Language and Literacy Classroom
Observation Toolkit (ELLCO) to assess the impact
of the program, provide greater insight on participant
needs to local facilitators, and assist participating
providers in strengthening the quality of early literacy
experiences for young children in their care. Funding
for HeadsUp! Reading in Providence has been
provided by the US Department of Health and Human
Services under an Early Learning Opportunities Act
